International Convention - Reno, Nevada, August 2004
This
was an incredible convention, packed with top level education
sessions, intense campaigning for International Director and
3rd Vice President offices, a keynote speech from THE Dr.
Steven Covey after he was presented with a Toastmasters Communication
and Leadership award, dancing to a live band with beautifully
costumed people from many countries, cultures and backgrounds
at the International Night Dance, then dressing up in formal
black for the President’s Dinner Dance.
A highlight was the 2004 World Championship of Public Speaking
International Speech contest, attended by 1600 Toastmasters
and 9 contestants, including Rick Brier of Region IV. The
winner was Randy Harvey, 51, a one-year member of Toastmasters
from Sherwood, Oregon. His speech, “Lessons from Fat
Dad,” described how his father taught him “how
to be a loving man – a good father and husband.”
Prior to the start of the Convention the Interdistricts Speech
Contest was held. Douglas Kruger of District 74 (southern
Africa) took "Highest Honours" and later went on
to gain "Second Highest Honours" in the International
Speech Contest final.
The Convention Kicks Off

Wednesday evening with the traditional parade of the flags
of all the nations that comprise the greater Toastmasters
family; over 80 flags in all This was a spectacular kaleidoscope
of colours, flourishes, music as well as applause and cheering
from the around 2000 people present. The stage was stunning
when all the flags were arrayed across its width. The audience
was then introduced to the entire Board of Directors by Ted
Corcoran, the outgoing International President.
Then it was onto the keynote address and educationals which
ranged over all sorts of themes such as "Corporate Visits
- Selling the Value of Toastmasters", "Boss It or
Toss It - Lifestyle Changes to Manage Your Time" and

the 21st Century".
